How do you become a Park City Firefighter/EMT?

Under the supervision of a Fire District Officer, and in compliance with Utah Law and Fire District Procedures, the position of Firefighter protects life and property by performing fire fighting, basic and advanced life support, and fire prevention duties.

The job of Firefighter is physically demanding. Firefighters must be in peak physical condition - both at the time of hire and throughout a Firefighter's career. Firefighters must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move 175 or more pounds.  To maintain peak physical condition, Park City Firefighters are required to participate in physical training during each shift and must pass a yearly physical ability test. 

Firefighters often work in hazardous conditions.  While performing their duties, firefighters regularly works in outside weather conditions, exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration, heat and sub-zero temperatures.  Firefighters occasionally work near moving mechanical parts, in high, precarious places, and in confined spaces.

The essential duties, functions and responsibilities of a Park City Firefighter include:

  • Respond to medical emergency calls with companies, examine patients on an emergency scene and initiate basic and intermediate life support as required.
  • Perform firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks.
  • Participate in fire drills, attend classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects.
  • Participate in the preplan and inspection of buildings, the inspection of hydrants, and other fire suppression systems as required.
  • Maintain fire equipment, apparatus and facilities.
  • Present programs to the community on safety, medical, and fire prevention topics.

The process of becoming a Park City Firefighter is as follows:

Candidate must first meet the minimum qualifications. 

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be (21) twenty-one years of age or older.
  • Utah Firefighter Level I Certification.
  • Utah Basic Emergency Medical Technician Certification.
  • Valid Driver’s License and positive driving record.
  • Candidates must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States of America at the time of application, or provide proof of appropriate work permit.

Candidates must complete the testing process.

  • Pass a comprehensive written examination.
  • Be in physical condition to successfully pass a physical ability test.
  • Complete an oral board interview.

Successful candidates are then placed on a two year, full-time hire list.
